Thermal energy systems of the future - hot trends and cool solutions for cities
“Following the Celsius Summit tradition, this free two-day conference will bring together politicians, industry representatives and research institutions from across Europe to connect and exchange ideas on how urban thermal energy systems are developing and how these integrated heating and cooling solutions of the future will allow smart cities to satisfy the energy needs of its citizens and businesses in a sustainable way,” says Celsius coordinator, Katrina Folland.
As energy systems evolve, they become increasingly interconnected, making them more robust but also more complex. One innovative example is the local digital marketplace created through UIA’s Fossil-free Energy Districts (FED) project where actors can buy and sell heating, cooling and electricity. Results and lessons learned from the FED project will set the stage and inspire participants during the first day of the summit.
“It is a great success that we have managed to create and demonstrate this new and unique energy system that is now in full operation on a campus area in Gothenburg, Sweden. Our ambition is to contribute to a future renewable energy system and the great deal of attention and interest FED has attracted, both nationally and internationally, confirms that the concept of local energy systems is on the rise,” says Stina Rydberg, project manager at Johanneberg Science Park.
Discussions about the FED project will be followed by panel debates with representatives from Celsius member cities. The panel debates will address the topics of sustainable cooling and sector coupling between thermal and electrical systems.
The second day will provide city representatives the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops lead by top experts in the field. The workshops will center around the following topics:
• Sustainable cooling solutions
• Facilitating the replication of demonstrators
• Decarbonisation pathways for cities with the HotMaps and Thermos energy planning tools
