ELECTRIC MOLICEIROS AT EUROPEAN CONFERENCE on MOBILITY MANAGEMENT
Since 1997 ECOMM has been a meeting point for politicians, engineers and the event offers a diverse and relevant number of experiences, like excursions, keynote speeches, presentations and workshops and even an exhibition.
Aveiro presented at ECOMM 2021 the case study for the electrification of traditional “molicieiros” boats used for touristic visits in the urban water canals of Aveiro city, and its contribution to a more sustainable mobility through the conversion of the combustion engines of the 27 moliceiros and mercantile boats to 100% electric, with an estimated annual reduction of 400Ton of CO2.
This project also includes the installation of an electrical charging network in 10 marine decks. Additionally, the Municipality will collect real time data from these devices regarding electric energy consumption and CO2 emissions savings with the possibility of sharing this data on the municipal urban data platform.
For Aveiro City Council the Environment represents a strategic political commitment in the governance of the Municipality, with several actions under development, such as the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, the world's largest movement of cities for climate action and local energy, of which Aveiro City Hall is one of the 10760 signatories, committing itself to support the implementation of the goal of 40% reduction in greenhouse gas-reduction by 2030 and to adopt a joint approach to mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
In this context, the Aveiro City Council has the ongoing construction of a new electric Ferryboat and respective charging station, a project that will represent an annual reduction of CO2 emissions of approximately 300 tons. Furthermore, there are already three 100% electric buses operating in Aveiro Municipality, the only ones operated by the Transdev operator in Portugal, in a universe of 1500 vehicles. The set of implemented projects by Aveiro City Council has the objective of significantly reducing CO2 emissions by about 1000 tons per year.
