Aveiro Tech Week
The opening session of Aveiro Tech Week, on October 13, was attended by the Mayor of Aveiro, José Ribau Esteves, the Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro, Artur Silva, the CEO of Altice Labs, Alexandre Fonseca and The Minister of State, Economy and Digital Transition, Pedro Siza Vieira, among other guests, sponsors and artists.
Throughout seven days within the city of Aveiro, a wide range of actions, conferences, exhibitions, light installations, sound, digital arts and performances, have reinforced the positioning of the Municipality and placed Aveiro as the epicenter of the technological path, in a growing affirmation process as a pole of attraction for the technological and creative industries.
In this edition TECHDAYS Aveiro exhibition took place at the heart of the city, showing smart urban technology in true life context. Over the last months, fifteen projects promoted by startups, scaleups and R&D institutions from different countries had the opportunity to develop and test their innovative solutions and technologies at the Aveiro Living Lab, within the scope of the Aveiro 5G and Aveiro Urban Challenges contests, co-financed by the Aveiro STEAM City project. These solutions were presented in the public space of the city, during the week of 12th to 16th October 2020, integrated in the Aveiro Tech Week, culminating the end of the 1st edition of the Challenges with the pitch of the 15 finalist projects, with the exception of those who couldn’t travel to Aveiro due to covid-19 pandemic.
On the 16th of October the final pitch to selected 3 final winners was held for the ten finalists of Aveiro 5G Challenges. For these startups, this was the last opportunity to present their projects and have the opportunity to win the final prize of 25.000,00€ each. On the same day the five finalists from Aveiro Urban Challenges pitch their solutions to address five urban challenges.
Aveiro 5G Challenges | Prize: 25.000,000€ each
- Live electric tours (Portugal)
- EVA Drones (United Kingdom)
- Biometrica (Italy)
Aveiro Urban Challenges | Prize: 20.000,00€ each
- ADRA | Augmented Reality (AR)challenge: AllbeSmart (Portugal );

The exhibition area of the event was integrated into the urban context of the city, giving visibility to these technological innovation projects, transforming the city as a living space for experimentation, reinforcing the importance of technology to boost innovation in the economic development and to improve the quality of life of the citizens.
Between October 12th and 15th, Aveiro hosted various demonstrations from the finalists of the Aveiro 5G Challenges and Aveiro Urban Challenges in six different locations within the city [Praça Marquês de Pombal, Rua Direita, Atlas Aveiro Building, Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho, Largo do Mercado José Estevão and Largo do Mercado Manuel Firmino]. The promoters of several projects also presented their innovative projects through live demonstrations.
Following the work carried out within Aveiro 5G and Urban Challenges, it was possible to develop synergies between stakeholders and startups of both challenges that, together, worked on the development of new solutions to showcase, as Veolia, Galp and Apria that presented during Teck Week a Hydrogen Powered bicycle and Allbesmart that presented a solution to 5G network metering.
