The Commission announces the 20 winners of the first call of the New European Bauhaus dedicated to place-based transformative projects led by small and medium-sized municipalities.

Through their experimentations, UIA digital projects are reflecting on how cities could collect, monitor, exchange and take advantage of data and how it could create new solutions to concretely impact citizen's relationship with public services, local economic development etc. More specifically, in this article you will read about how Rennes Métropole, the city of Heerlen and Ravenna are building on data to foster local development and improve citizens digital skills and culture.

Addressing the potential labour market impacts of the climate neutral transition is central to the European Green Deal. UIA is exploring the good practices implemented by UIA cities to mitigate the impact of job losses and to support industry adaptation and the growth of new climate neutral industry sectors. This article frames the approach to this analysis, summarizing the inception report, jointly written by UIA experts Eddy Adams, Costantinos Cartalis and Ronald Lievens.

While the year 2021 has been quite challenging, UIA projects continue to strive for great results and make a positive impact on cities around Europe. This year has brought together a wealth of knowledge from projects, countless good practices on sustainable urban development and innovative solutions as well as lessons learnt from urban challenges. We are very proud to share with you these key achievements and hope these serve as a source of inspiration for you and your city!

UIA is conducting a two-year knowledge development activity focused on Just Transitions, contribution UIA cities are making towards this goal. This article provides an update on the initial process, focused on jobs and skills in the climate neutral economy.

Register for the webinar organised by the Joint Research Centre in collaboration with DG REGIO on 25 November from 10.00 to 12.00. It is meant in continuation with the Urban Development Network webinars “Six building blocks to Sustainable Urban Development” that was organised in November 2020.

The International City Partnerships: Acting for Green and Inclusive Recovery is a project of the European Union and managed by the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) of the European Commission. The project will be implemented from October 2021 – March 2023 and originate in a pilot project of the European Parliament. The objective of this project is to contribute to the improvement of quality of life in participating cities, by promoting sustainable and integrated urban development, through the identification of innovative policies and programmes. There will be four cities selected from Canada, and four cities selected from South Africa. In addition to Singapore and Hong Kong, there will be a selection of two South Korean cities and two Taiwanese cities in Asia. From Europe there will be a total of fourteen cities selected from different Member States.
