Virtual models of urban future vision 2030 and 2050

Virtual models of urban future vision 2030 and 2050
In UIR project WP6 Piloting includes also virtual modelling of the city center of city of Lappeenranta. LAB University of Applied Sciences, Design Reform and City of Lappeenranta have developed virtual models of urban future vision 2030 and 2050 to MapGets platform and visions will be freely accessible in internet. In addition, virtual future visions are applied to game application unreal engine and shown in cave room and/or via virtual glasses.

The group of UIR-project workers visited city of Tampere in February to learn more about cave solutions and virtual reality systems in urban development. Rodrigo Coloma designer and information model coordinator of city of Tampere introduced their cave premises, virtual glasses, 3d printed city miniature and told lot about virtual reality systems and 3D data of the city. The digital showroom facilities are located in old Finlayson factory in the heart of the city. The atmosphere of the showroom facilities are modern and cosy with robust industrial touch.
The system of city of Tampere can also be used as an important tool for effective collaboration on various types of architectural 3D-models, aiding the decision-making during the meetings that will be held in the space. Good examples of such meetings are the constantly growing numbers of alliance contracting model -projects happening in Finland.
The Cave showroom in Tampere consist of 4 projectors, of which 3 are focused towards walls and one to the floor (though the floor was covered, because people felt sick of too much 3D effects). Frequency 60 Hz is mostly used. Problems occured if using 120 Hz. We watched and experienced modelling, which were produced in game motor Unity. Also material produced with Unreal Engine is valid to the system. Rodrigo also showed cover model of Tampere city center, which he had made from photographs with tool called Context capture.
All materials which we saw and experienced looked very nice and impressive. Definitely this kind of cave showroom we would like to have in Lappeenranta and in the frames of UIR we are able to accomplish it!
