ToNite local projects are now in full swing: new services and initiatives along the Dora River

tonite
The projects selected and co-financed through the local call launched by ToNite are transforming the quality of life of neighbourhoods along the Dora River. These projects deal with active citizenship actions, social and cultural initiatives and the creation of new services in the area. These activities are addressed to different categories of residents, and are attracting visitors and participants from other areas of the city.
Here are some of the most interesting experiences carried out by NGOs and groups of residents on the ground.

Sport is the main focus of Aurora in Movimento project, promoting community engagement of local inhabitants of different ages, nationalities and genders. A weekly calendar of activities, such as aerobic and gymnastics, basketball, table football, hip-hop and street games in public spaces, is improving the perception of safety and liveability in the neighbourhood at evening and night-time.

Based on the objective of rediscovering the riverside called Lungo Dora Napoli with experimental artistic and musical activities, Lunadora proposes an outdoor web radio laboratory open to all. The project is also creating itineraries to discover hidden places and street art in Aurora, photography and bookbinding workshops for young and old residents, creative recycling workshops, photographic exhibitions and live music concerts.

Usanze Pellegrine is involving the inhabitants in co-designing and reopening the Pellegrino Garden, a green space closed to the public for years. A rich program of public events and activities is promoted monthly, such as grandparents’ stories for children, music and street art performances, juggling and circus courses, film reviews, readings and meetings for discussing how to consolidate creative uses of the green area with the active support of the local community.

DORAinavanti is involving migrant communities in a wide range of activities. Among these cultural and animation initiatives organized for children, youth and families, the workshops of Chinese calligraphy and the intercultural cooking classes, outdoor chess competitions, circus laboratories are attracting families with children workshops, while the creation of a web radio is fostering innovative forms of storytelling of the neighbourhood.

The AuroraFood project is focused on the richness of Aurora’s gastronomic cultures, as a way to foster active inclusion and social cohesion among different groups residing in the neighbourhood. A team of so-called “gastronomic mediators” organizes gastronomic and cultural tours to discover world cuisines just by visiting different corners of the neighbourhood.

Creating a new narrative of Borgo Aurora rediscovering the hidden beauty of the area is the objective of the Grandangolo project, which is fostering an artistic initiative based on sending postcards from Aurora to recipients based abroad, but also on actions of tactical urbanism involving children and students and an open-air exhibition.

I Giardini sulla Dora project is promoting a co-design process with local students for regenerating public spaces in a collaborative way. The project is launching “an outdoor classroom”, using the public space of the area as learning space for all.

Developing sense of place and community spirit among local youth is the objective of the Scandagli project - Courtyards in network along the Dora River, which is fostering sustainable behaviours through the organization of workshops and activities with children and teenagers from schools of the neighbourhood.

#iorestoacasa (delquartiere) project proposes a calendar of musical events and theatrical performances, co-designed with the participation of young people attending evening educational activities.

An urban regeneration process is led by the Indigenous project, co-planned which local inhabitants and associations. The project is aimed at finding out a new and shared neighbourhood identity through a wide range of collaborative activities.

Manage Your Night project is focused on the nightlife management, involving workers of cultural and entertainment sector (clubs, bars, events) to build awareness on night problems and enhance the creation of new skills for managing and preventing risks but also for promoting safer-night goals.

A mobile social-health night unit was created by Per.Notte, a project bringing support to young people and club managers through creative activities of awareness, prevention and reduction of risks from the use of alcohol and substances.

A social-health support service is provided by ApeCare, a mobile centre of volunteers, young street educators and doctors, offering proximity services of basic health care and guidance to local services, addressed to deprived groups.

Una Famiglia che Accoglie is enhancing the reception services for fragile people, offering jobs and skills trainings, Italian language courses and individual and family psychological support.

A series of projects are carrying out structural interventions and regeneration of private spaces to be open citizens. The YallaAurora project has recovered an abandoned place to launch a new hub for active engagement of the local community, co-designed and co-managed by young people: a study room and a reading and coworking room, a cinema for children, cultural meetings, language courses and desks for social and working support.

A new place for active engagement of residents, called “Il Salotto di Miranda” is being built by the Baracot project, which co-designed with the local community new public spaces and a series of social and aggregation activities.

Creating a urban beach on the Dora River is the idea of the Bocciofila 2.0 project, a place for aggregation and entertainment for people of all ages: this space offers educational and sporting activities in the nature, yoga classes, outdoor cinema, jazz concert.

The Steiner and the City project, dedicated to neighbourhood’s students and inhabitants, will show on the big  screen artistic and multimedia works on the banks of the Dora River, promoting the graphic, photographic and video productions of students for raising awareness on themes of social interest and improving the safety perception of the visitors of the Dora area.

The Leone Ginzburg Campus is renovating a building that will host the International University College of Turin, the library of the Giuliano Einaudi Foundation and the Café Basaglia a famous aggregation centre from Borgo Aurora.
