Plane Tree Project

Plane Tree Project
When Főkert (the company of the Municipality of Budapest in charge of green area management) decided to cut down eleven plane trees as they were dangerous to their environment because of their poor conditions, this made several groups think about a way to organically incorporate pieces of the felled trees into our environment. This is how the Plane Tree Project was born which was implemented with the support of Insert. The events of the project took place as part of Eleven Tavasz cultural festival.

For the opening of the project, those interested could take part in a public forum held at the KÉK Contemporary Architecture Centre. Here they could listen to a conversation with various invited guests, including Sándor Bardóczi, the main landscape architect of Budapest. There was talk about the role and spread of plane trees in the urban environment, and the reasons that led to their felling. In addition to the professional discussion, an exhibition was held, which could be viewed throughout the events of the Plane Tree Project.

The second program was a textile printing workshop and totem building with the help of fine artist Gábor Koós, during which the participants could press the veins of the plane trees on the bag and / or t-shirt they brought with themselves, and build a totem from painted wooden discs using the picket left in a felled tree’s place.

In the meantime, the diligent visitors participated in the opening of the Gellért Insect Resort ***** in Szent Gellért Square. As part of a creative DIY workshop organized by the College of Architects, participants made an insect and bird hotel out of the trunks of felled plane trees, giving something back to the insects and birds that may have suffered even more from the felling of plane trees than we did.

At the corner of Vásárhelyi Pál and Bartók Béla roads, a bench made by Pálma was inaugurated in the form of a picnic. The bench is made of one of the largest cut-out plane tree trunks, making it a beautiful memory for the tree that once stood there.

Last but not least, the Plane Tree and Bartók walk was led by architect Bálint Köves, during which the participants could visit the sites of Project Platán, while learning a lot about the background of the project, the condition of the remaining trees and the development, built environment and less visible cultural composition of Bartók Béla road.
