Discover the 22 new projects of the 3rd UIA Call for Proposals
As for the previous calls, the competition among cities has been particularly intense with 184 proposals received. Urban authorities from 21 Member States have generated an incredibly rich wealth of new ideas and approaches to tackle policy topics as complex as air quality, adaptation to climate change, affordable housing and jobs and skills.
The 22 selected projects are :
- Adaptation to climate change : RESILIO (Amsterdam, NL), GBG_AS2C (Barcelona, ES), Oasis (Paris, FR), CartujaQanat (Sevilla, ES), Guardian (Riba Roja de Turia, ES), IGNITION (Greater Manchester)
- Air Quality : DIAMS (Aix en Provence/Marseille Metropole, FR), AirQon (Breda, NL), HOPE (Helsinki, FI), CLAIRO (Ostrava, CZ), Air Heritage (Portici, IT)
- Jobs and skills : Aveiro STEAM City (Aveiro, PT), Cluj Future of Work (Cluj Napoca, RO), UFIL (Cuenca, ES), P4W (Eindhoven, NL), GSIP (Vantaa, FI), NextGen Microcities (Ventspils and Valmiera, LV)
- Housing : CALICO (Bruxelles Capital Region, BE), E-Co-Housing (Zuglo' XIV District Budapest, HU), ICCArus (Ghent, BE), Home Silk Road (Lyon Metropole, FR), Yes We Rent (Mataro', ES)
The selected projects have been considered as the most innovative not only for their ability to integrate elements of radical innovation (technological or process-oriented) with more traditional components of the respective policy field. But also for their attempt to innovate in the composition of an inclusive and rich local partnerships as well as for their experimental approach to evaluation of local results.
At a glance, the 22 projects reflect the diversity of European urban contexts and challanges.
Urban authorities and local actors from Portugal to Latvia and from Finland to Italy will start in the next months testing at a real urban scale their bold ideas. With this Call, Portugal, Romania, Latvia and Czech Republic have enriched the already diverse group of 17 Member States with at least one UIA city.
If the list of selected projects includes 4 capital cities and other major urban centres and metropolitan authorities with more than 800.000 inhabitants, almost 40 % of the urban authorities involved have less 200.000 inhabitants. Cities like Portici, Ventspils, Aveiro, Riba Roja and Cuenca will try to demonstrate that it is possible to design and implement bold and experimental projects regardless the size of their territory and population.
The projects are now at the starting blocks and will work, among other things, on their dedicated webpages within the UIA website. Over the next months the projects' webpages will be the main place where to find updated information on the implementation phase as well as the main learning points captured by UIA Experts.
