Democratic Transitions for All

Climate change poses an existential threat to humanity; a threat so great that conventional technologies and governance paradigms will not solve it. 

Tackling climate change requires deep systemic change across society (European Environment Agency 2019). This change will affect everyone – some will benefit from new business ventures and jobs; others will face the risk of energy poverty, unemployment, health problems, and other negative consequences.

The following chapters summarise the solutions found under three sub-topics: fostering citizen participation, collaborative decision-making and individual behavioural changes.

The experience gained in UIA projects confirms the advantages of collaborative governance, which is in line with the literature and experience of other programmes.

While all 14 case studies of surveyed projects offer valuable insights about most of the aspects discussed in the previous chapters, the following case studies are particularly instructive in a variety of ways, which will be further discussed.
